Rattleware 58-Milimeter Round-Handled Tamper, Small

Well….

A tamper is basically a disk of precise size, usually flat, sometimes slightly convex. Heavier is, within limits, better.

The Rattleware tamper is the right size and weight, and the smaller handle means you’re less likely to lean on it and over-tamp the coffee.

So why only three stars? Because the edge of the tamper base was chipped and dented. And metal edges are sharp and hard, and had I scooted this across my countertop, it would have left a scratch.

So a little sandpaper and steel wool later, and I have a tamper that will perform well. But I shouldn’t have to dig into a toolbox to get such a simple device to function.

Sturdy, does the job

I haven’t tried any other tampers besides the plastic one that came with my machine. This is a big improvement and I can’t imagine having any criticism about it. It’s heavy and coffee doesn’t stick to it.

Best High-Quality Tamper for the Money

I did research on tampers prior to the decision to order the Rattleware one. I asked myself these questions: Would it be heavy enough? Would it properly fit the portafilter basket (of my Gaggia full size professional portafilter)? Would the tamper’s black handle remain firmly attached after a lot of use? Is the tamper of high build quality? The answers to all those questions turned out to be ‘yes’. As a former cafe manager, I can say with confidence that this tamper would withstand use in a busy cafe. You will not regret your purchase.
