Good Solid Mat, Fading Rubber Odor
Solid mat holds up to heavy tamping pressure, protecting counter surfaces. Dimensions are accurate (6 x 8), but photo shows a mat with different dimensions. When new, the mat had a heavy (and offensive) rubber smell. Multiple washings have reduced the odor, and hopefully that reduction will continue…. The odor kept me from giving the product 5 stars.
Works great – stinks bad
Pad is nice thickness and does the job. Smell is really bad and I expect multiple washings and leaving out in sun will help – some web sites suggest putting it in bag with kitty litter for several days/weeks works well. Expect it will stink really bad for awhile.
Good mat, bad smell (may not be FDA compliant)
The mat does a great job at providing a solid yet non-rigid surface while tamping your coffee. The shape and size is just right for the Breville portafilter. The rubber seems impervious to scratches and dents since the mat looks as new as day one, even though it has been used quite a bit. The mat is extremely easy to clean and dries very quickly after a wash.
The only drawback to an otherwise perfect tamping mat is the smell. It has a strong rubber tire scent, which doesn’t seem to go away. I place the portafilter on the tamping mat once I’m done with my coffee and it only takes a few minutes for the rubber scent to be transferred to the portafilter. Judging by the smell, I doubt that the rubber used for this tamping mat is FDA compliant. This mat feels and smells like cheap tire rubber. I also think that this rubber is not safe to be used around food.
There is so much talk about the heating your cups, heating your portafilter, etc. Then at the end you…
