Easy to buy, hard to install
I give this part 5 stars because it replaces the original shaft on my DLC-5 perfectly. It arrived promptly, and was shipped in a nice padded envelope. But beware that it is difficult to install, and in doing so you might just wreck your machine.
My experience, in the hopes it may be of use to others:
To remove the old shattered shaft cover I first snipped off the old plastic bits until the flattened portion of the metal motor shaft was fully exposed. I grabbed the remnants of the old cover’s plastic with vise-grips, while holding the motor shaft steady with a second pair, and rocked the the cover back and forth and upwards until it came off. (I actually wound up breaking off all of the old plastic while doing this, but was able to get enough of a grip on the old cover’s brass ring).
I had to clean out a bunch of old plastic shards and grease and stuff from the hole around the shaft – this area must be completely clean in order for the new cover to fit…
Worked but had to have a pro put it on
I was unable to remove the old shaft cover. I had to take it to a shop. The guy charge me $20 to fix it and he said it took him FOREVER. I guess it was money well spent.
